Locum Tenens 101: What is it?

What is Locum Tenens?

There are a variety of reasons for hospitals and clinics to utilize locum tenens staffing: Provider shortages, vacation or CME meetings, and seasonal patient volume peaks, just to name a few. With the ratio of medical positions to providers available out of balance in the healthcare industry, the need for temporary or long-term staffing help is growing.

What is Locum Tenens?

Locum tenens is taken from a Latin phrase meaning “to hold the place of, to substitute for.” Most commonly referring to temporary physicians or mid-levels, locum tenens doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners contract to perform medical services for a healthcare organization over a certain period of time. The medical provider works as an independent contractor paid through a staffing agency (such as Advanced Care Providers), which is in turn paid by the healthcare facility.

Today thousands of MD’s, PA’s and NP’s contract as locum tenens to provide staffing service for hospitals, outpatient medical centers, government and military facilities, group practices, community health centers and correctional facilities. Although a young industry, locum tenens staffing continues to grow as more and more providers choose this way of practicing medicine.
